The Cask of Amontillado is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in the November issue of Godey's Lady's Book. The story is set in an unnamed Italian city at carnival time in an unspecified year, and is about a man taking fatal revenge on a friend whom, he believes, has insulted him. Spectral Visions is an annual Gothic conference hosted by the University of Sunderland. It explores the dark, the decadent and the terrifying aspects of Gothic literature and language. This blog is a student-run initiative, where Visionaries showcase their creative talents and learning in short stories, poems and essays on the Gothic.
The result was probably a bit too experimental and legibility was challenging. The other comps told more what the book was about. Everyone liked the carnival ticket idea but wanted something more akin to the reissue of Bradbury’s Fahrenheit Matt Owen’s (truly awesome) design has a more graphic and less photographic style. The story has a nice spectral twist in the middle of it where Dick visits the Lost Carnival. It also shows Dick and his relationship with his parents. Writer Michael Moreci really nails these scenes and it is a wonderful script overall. It isn’t edgy but it does show some nice work with each of the characters. Astor published a volune of his stories, Pharaoh’s Daughter and Other Stories (), but, aside from including only a few of his weird stories (several of which were written after the book’s publication), it included some historical tales that to my mind do not represent him to best advantage.
Astor also wrote some full-length historical. Like a cheesy carnival spook-show, Talbot's third horror novel (The Bog, ; The Delicate Dependency, ) features a colorful come-on—the most ingenious haunted house in years; but once you're inside, the monsters prove all rusty wire and papiermachÉ.
